TUMMY TUCKS (ABDOMINOPLASTY
Tummy tuck is the common term used for what Plastic Surgeons call abdominoplasty. Tummy Tucks remove theextra skin caused by pregnancy, weight changes and other mechanisms. There are different methods of tummy tucks. Which one works best is determined by your specific shape. There are different type of tummy tuck and the technique used is related to the amount of skin, stretch marks and fat to be removed. A mini tuck removes a small amount of skin (shown in red) from the lower abdomen, the belly button is not moved and lipo suction removes much of the fat from the stomach wall, sides and thighs.
Mini Tummy Tucks

A standard tuck removes all the skin and fat from the belly button to the bikini hair line.  The skin from above the belly button is attached to lower skin margin and a new belly button created at the site of the old belly button.  Imposition is also used to removed unwanted fat from the sides, upper stomach wall.    Unwanted fat is removed from the back, sides and thighs at the same time using liposuction depending on circumstances and need.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tucks is used when the excessive skin and looseness extends to the back and side walls of the stomach area.Removing the additional skin removes the roll of back side skin when liposuction would remove the unwanted fat but leave loose extra skin. With an extended tummy tuck that side wall extra skin is removed as shown in the illustration. This does lengthen the procedure time and also make the scar longer but is often the best solution to individual with a large fold or roll of extra skin on the back.

Belt Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

The tummy tuck that removes the most skin and fat from the stomach wall and back is referred to as a belt or circumferential tummy tuck. This operation is usually required when an individual has lost large amounts of weight and has large folds of excess skin on the stomach and back.  This operation is often used for individuals after stomach bypass bariatric operations.  Following this operation the scar extends around the entire waist like a belt. The scar can be varied in position by the surgeon depending on an individuals request. This illustrations shows a typical surgery plan.

Tummy Tuck Scars

After a tummy tuck procedure expect to have significant contour changes but don’t expect exact symmetry.  Improved contour and symmetry is a goal but exact symmetry isn't the goal and isn't’t possible to achieve.   Following cosmetic procedures you will find that you examine your body more carefully and will notice things previously not noted.  The scars from tummy tuck procedures are initially red then turn to pink and finally white over a 6-12 month period of time.  When the scars are white healing is complete.   The scar are located in the general vicinity shown in the illustration below.   The goal is to be able to conceal them with  clothing.  Obviously the more scant the clothing the more visible the scars will be.  The scars that follow tummy tucks are not hair line scars and typically are  1/8-3/8 inches wide.    The width varies with location, procedure and your genetic healing qualities.
